Modified Stem of a Plant



Stems usually serve to support the plant, to transport water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant, and to generate new growth. Modified stems, a category that includes thorns (such as those on the rose bush pictured here), rhizomes, and photosynthetic stems, usually have similar tissues to ordinary stems, but have different structures and purposes. Thorns, for example, serve to protect plants from grazing animals.
