Cambium

Cambium

The cambium layer in plants in the layer between the xylem and phloem. It is made up of dividing cells and is responsible for secondary plant growth. Secondary plant growth refers to growth in thickness, not length. The cambium pushes the phloem outward and keeps the xylem inward. The phloem then becomes bark and the xylem becomes sapwood.
