Detritivores are considered organisms that obtain their nutrients from decomposing matter including decomposing animals, plants, etc. Detritivores are highly beneficial towards many of the world’s ecosystems as they are essential to speeding up the decomposition of a lot of matter. In addition to this, they are often eaten by consumers in many food webs and play a key role in the Nitrogen cycle. Slugs and worms are two popular and common examples of detritvores. The hole pictured above was very likely made by a detritivore (worm) that was undergoing its normal everyday functions.
