In plants with alternating haploid and diploid generations (most land plants), sporophytes are the diploid, asexual generation. They produce spores through meiosis that then develop into gametophytes, the haploid, gamete-producing generation of the plant. In flowering plants, the sporophyte is the entire body of the plant except the pollen and embryo sac.
