A detritovore, also know as a decomposer, is an organism that gets its energy from dead organisms. Fungi and prokaryotes are the two main groups of detritovores. This earthworm is a detritovore that feeds on leaf litter. The earthworm discharges enzymes that have the ability to digest the organic material and then absorb the products that were broken down. All detritovores have this ability which is what makes them important in a working ecosystem.
