Ethylene

Ethylene is a gaseous plant hormone. It has the simplest structure of the plant hormones associated with fruit ripening. Methods for stimulating it, thereby quickening fruit ripening, reach all the way back to ancient Egyptians. Aside from fruit ripening, ethylene also stimulates shoot and root growth and flower opening. Ethylene is produced in all parts of higher plants, as it serves many functions.
