Eukaryote

apbio4

A eukaryote is an organism whose cell has specialized organelles in the cytoplasm, a membrane-bound nucleus, and DNA bound together by proteins into chromosomes. Eukaryote literally means “good kernel.” When compared to prokaryotes, eukaryotes are larger and more complex. Eukaryotes have a system of division by either mitosis or meiosis. All organisms except bacteria and Archaea are eukaryotes, which makes the plant in the picture above a eukaryote.
