Cambium

DSC_0081

Cambium is the single layer of cells between phloem and xylem that produce new cells that will differentiate into other plant tissues. The cells on the outside will differentiate into phloem, and the cells on the inside will differentiate into xylem. This increases the thickness of stems and roots, and causes the formation of tree rings in the trunks of trees. Cambium also functions to heal damaged areas in a plant.
