Gymnosperms are seed producing, gymnospermos is Greek for “naked seed,” which is where the term gymnosperm is derived from. They are called naked seeds because the seeds do not develop inside an ovary. Gymnosperm leaves can last many growing seasons or they can just grow for only one season then die. Some gymnosperms leaves are needlelike, evergreen, and produce cones. The gymnosperm above is needlelike, but has not yet produced cones.
