Lichen

Lichen

Lichen is classified in a phylum of fungi. Lichen grows symbiotically with algae or cyanobacterium. This results in crusty patches and bushy growths on tree trunks as shown in the picture. The fungal component of the lichen gathers water and nutrients for the algae and cyanobacterium because of this relationship they can survive in harsh environments like mountaintops and Polar Regions.
