R-strategists (such as the ants shown here) are organisms who live in unstable environments that favor the ability to reproduce quickly over the ability to produce “quality” offspring. They tend to be small and mate randomly. Their offspring become independent from their parents quickly (sometimes even immediately after birth), reach a reproductive age quickly, and require little energy investment. Populations of r-strategist organisms tend to fluctuate far above and below their carrying capacity.
