A meristem is a type of tissue in plants on which growth can occur. Meristems of plants are the areas in which organs can develop extend. Meristems can also give rise to things such as flowers and leaves. Apical meristems function by giving plants an initial growing zone that is responsible for much of the plant’s original or primary development. Several different types of meristems exist. These include root apical meristems, floral meristems, intercalary meristems, and shoot apical meristems. All of these are adapted to the conditions that the specific plant faces. Above we can see a plant that has many meristems that allow for its development.
