The picture above depicts coconuts, which are the ovaries of the flowers of palm trees. A fruit is a flower’s ovary and coconuts are a type of fruit called a drupe, which has a hard shell surrounded by an outer fleshy exterior. The fruit or ovary is the part of the flower where the ovule is held. After fertilization, the ovules become seeds, the ovary of the flower ripens and forms into nutrient filled fruit for the seeds to feed off of before they can get sufficient nutrients for themselves or a a means of seed dispersal. The coconut has a rough exterior yet it floats, allowing for the coconut seeds to be dispersed across large bodies of water.
