Epithelial Tissue

The epithelial tissue consists of the outermost cell layers of the skin. The epithelial tissue in the skin has many functions in the human body. One of its primary functions is as the first defense against pathogens invading the body, ultraviolet radiation, chemical compounds, and mechanical resistance. It also plays a vital role in conserving water and sweating. Finally this layer of skin is where most of the body’s melanocytes lie. Melanocytes are the biggest factor in determining skin color. The layer of skin seen in the picture above is the epithelial tissue of a human being. however, this tissue can also cover the surface of organs and play other vital roles in internal secretion.
