Exoskeleton

An exoskeleton is an external skeleton that provides a barrier against predators and supports an animal’s body. Some common animals with exoskeletons include insects, such as the dirt dauber in the picture and grasshoppers, and crustaceans like crabs and lobsters as well as shelled animals. Chitin forms the exoskeleton in many of these animals plus many more organisms like fungi and bacteria.
