The photo above shows ants that have been acquiring nectar and nutrients from a plant for a few weeks, without harming the plant. This phenomenon is known as mutualism. Both organisms, the ants and the plant, are benefitting from their relationship together and neither of them are harmed. The ants are gaining nectar and nutrients from the plant and the plant is gaining protection from the ants fending off any other insects that attempt to eat its leaves.
