Basidiomycetes

Basidiomycetes

Basidiomycetes include the most familiar types of fungi- mushrooms. Their name comes from the basidium, a structure that creates spores and is shaped like a club. Basidiomycetes also includes shelf fungy and puffballs. Several types of fungi are great decomposers and break down the lignin in wood. Occasionally, in response to the environment, basidiomycetes reproduce sexually by creating basidiocarps. Basidiocarps are elaborate fruiting structures. In fact, the white mushrooms shown in the picture are an example of basidiocarps. These structures can pop out of the ground in a couple of hours.
