Vestigial structures are those that do not perform their original function. Some examples of human vestigiality include the appendix, wisdom teeth, tonsils, and pinky toes. The appendix and wisdom teeth were once used for digesting plant material, but when our diets changed they lost that function. Our tonsils were part of the body’s immune system, but now days most people have them removed when they get infected. In the same way, pinky toes are no longer needed for balance and therefore no longer have any use.
