Biological Magnification

Biological Magnification

Biological magnification is the increase in concentration of a substance that occurs in a food chain. Substances such as the insecticide DDT and the mercury within this thermometer are capable of biological magnification. Although only small amounts of mercury are present in seawater, it is efficiently absorbed by organisms, but excreted at a low rate; allowing it to increase in concentration the further it travels up the food chain.
