A producer is an organism that makes organic food molecules from CO2, H2O, and other inorganic raw materials. Producers form the base of the food chain, or the first trophic level. A producer is an autotrophic organism that uses either photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Examples include plants, algae, some protists, and some prokaryotes.
