R-strategists have a completely different growth pattern in comparison to K-strategists. They normally have small bodies and mature rapidly. Their population grows exponentially but it eventually crashes. Their population size is huge and there is rapid fluctuation within the population size itself. The environment is not stable, it is disrupted, and it has low resources and diversity. R-strategists try to maximize their number of offspring. They have low parental investment and they mate randomly. Their offspring are born independent and they have early reproductive maturity. Examples of R-strategists are mosquitoes, weeds, and mice.
