Heterotroph

Heterotroph

This photo shows a blue tang (slightly to the right of the center), and several other fish. These fish are heterotrophs because they cannot produce organic material from inorganic material like plants and other autotrophs. Also, they need to digest organic material in order to gain energy, instead of using processes like photosynthesis to produce their own food, heterotrophs rely on complex organic substances in order to get energy.
