Homeostasis

Homeostasis

Homeostasis is a word meaning “a steady state.” Animals regulate their internal environment constantly. Despite the constant fluctuations in the animal’s external environment, homeostatic mechanisms maintain internal conditions. Mammals, such as the deer in the picture, have a control system to keep temperature within an acceptable range for bodily functions and metabolic processes. Even though the deer is sitting still, its internal organs and systems are extremely active, serving as unwavering control systems, adjusting according to outside changes.
