Rhizome

Rhizomes are underground, horizontal stems of a plant. This type of root has the ability to produce more roots and shoots. Some rhizomes thicken in some areas because of storage of starch, proteins, and other nutrients. Their buds allow the stem to separate and form a new plant. All the unique characteristics of rhizomes make it an example of a modified stem of a plant. Ginger is a common example of a rhizome.
