Fermentation

A classic example of an organism that uses fermentation is yogurt. In fermentation, the yogurt uses a metabolic process to convert sugar to acids, using bacteria. Fermentation lacks the electron transport chain and instead uses a reduced carbon source such as glucose and makes products it needs such as lactic acid. Fermentation uses substrate level phosphorylation which results in less ATP than oxidative phosphorylation.
