Parasitism

Miramar-Pembroke Pines-20130818-00046

The parasitic bite on the human (or host) shown above exemplifies parasitism. Parasitism is a non-mutual relationship in which one organism, the parasite, benefits at the expense of another organism. The parasite usually harms the other organism, the host, in the process of gaining for itself. Unlike mutualism in which both organisms benefit and neither are harmed, parasitism harms one organism and benefits the other.
