The image above depicts a worm, which can be described as a soil dwelling detritovore. Detritovores like the one above gain nutrients from decomposing plants and animals, as well as animal droppings. They are an important part of most ecosystems and act as a recycling system, turning dead organisms into nutrients for the soil. They are usually referred to as decomposers, but unlike decomposers, they can digest large lumps of matter.
