A carbohydrate is a sugar, or one of its dimers, or polymers (monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides). Carbohydrates serve as fuel and building material. Maltose is a disaccharide, (which consists of two monosaccharides joined by a covalent bond), formed by the combination of two molecules of glucose. Maltose is an ingredient used to brew beer.
