Above is a picture of cycad, a species of gymnosperm. In plants, gymnosperms are a type of seed plant whose seeds are uncovered, and unprotected. Instead, the seeds on gymnosperms develop in cones to protect the seeds. The leaves of cycads are long and stiff, and are called pinnate leaves. On the leaves is a central leaf stalk, and parallel “ribs.” The seeds will develop at the top of the trunk, and at the base of the leaves.
