Cacti are plants that have to live in harsh conditions with limited water. Therefore, they need to have adaptions to survive. For example, the stem of a cactus has a waxy layer to prevent water from evaporating. Wax is hydrophobic. A substance is hydrophobic when it doesn’t dissolve in polar substances, like water. Hydrophobic molecules tend to be non polar and group together.
