Xylem

Xylem

Xylem is a complex star-shaped dead tissue that transports water and minerals from the roots of a plant to higher parts. Unlike phloem, xylem is unidirectional and can only move things up. Xylem is found in the roots, stem, and leaves of a plant.  It occurs in the center the vascular bundle. The photo of the tree bark shown above contains xylem within its layers.
