The lizard shown above is a heterotroph. Heterotrophs contrast directly with autotrophs in that they are organisms that cannot fix carbon to make their own food or use organic carbon for their growth processes, and must obtain their food and energy through other means. The most common heterotrophs are animals, fungi, and bacteria.
