Modified Stem Of A Plant

Modified Stem Of A Plant

I’m Not Sure What These Plants Are Called…

A modified stem is a specialized or transformed stem. It is a plant organ that is usually a portion of the aboveground parts of the plant collectively called shoot, but in some species they are underground. They are modified in that they perform special functions and are usually transformed into non-stem forms. But although they may not appear like normal stems, anatomical evaluation will reveal that they are stems as contrasted to roots and leaves. In the picture above, the thorns or spikes from the plant would be considered a modified stem.
