Redox Reactions

A Battery

A redox reaction is a reaction where oxidation and reduction occurs simultaneously. Oxidation is when an atom or molecule loses electrons. Reduction is when the molecule or atom gains electrons or endures a decrease in oxidation state. In the picture above, a battery would be an example of a redox reaction because on one electrode you would get oxidation and on the other electrode you would get reduction.
