Due to an increase number of mitochondria per cell when compared to ectotherms, endotherms are able to generate heat internally without the help of any external system. By metabolizing faster, the organism is able to create more heat. In birds, like the Indian ring neck parrot pictured, blood vessels in their lower legs act as a heat exchange system since the veins are parallel to the arteries where heat is extracted and shared.
