Parasitism

Parasitism

Parasitism is a non-mutual relationship between a host and a parasitic organism that lives off of it. In the picture it shows how lichen lives off the nutrients produced by the palm tree. The plant is deprived from its nutrients as the lichen penetrates deeply into the tree allowing more air to exchange in the bark, and ultimately causing the tree bark cells to thicken and become more permeable to water, sickening the tree. As a result the plant may die due to this exposure to the organism (parasite).
