Xylem

The main function of the xylem (a heterogeneous tissue) is to move water and minerals from the roots, work against gravity, and deliver them to the leaves. The only living part of the xylem is the parenchyma, although xylem is usually referred to as a dead and complex permanent tissue. The stem of a leaf is pictured.
