Lichens are organisms consisting of a fungus and a photosynthetic partner that grow together in a symbiotic relationship. They are physiologically and biochemically very different from isolated fungus and algae in culture. Lichen can occur even in Earth’s most extreme environments such as the arctic tundra and hot deserts.
